Dear Dr Uma,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you by email. My name is Jansen, a Year 2 Hospitality Degree undergraduate from Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Prior to joining SIT, I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma in leisure and resorts management. During my diploma I was given the opportunity to intern in the Front Office and Public Relations departments at The Residence Mauritius, handling a wide range of international guests’ requests.
Formerly, I was part of the Ritz Carlton banquet crew assisting in ballroom and business events. During national service, my tenacity and professionalism landed me an important role of a DY S3 where I managed and assisted the S3 branch, the headquarters of the battalion. Including managing training schedule and coordinating with the respective training venues. Subsequently, Uniqlo gave me an insight into the retail industry, interacting with customers from all backgrounds. With that, I took away many commendable service qualities such as reliability and efficiency.
In the past, I would have described myself as a loose-lipped person. My remarks were not well received and were then known to be insensitive. However, through the years of guidance from my family and friends, I learnt to more self-aware while paying attention to the reactions of my listeners. Also, being empathetic and patient in listening to others. Maintaining a conversation with people now has become an easier task for me. I recognize that effective listening and communication is an essential element that I now focus on at work. Although I have confidence speaking in front of a small group, I feel anxious presenting to a larger group.
Looking forward, I focus on developing my stage confidence in this module. While further advancing my knowledge about communication techniques and writing skills which are valuable to me towards achieving my goal of becoming a hotel manager.
Yours sincerely,
Jansen Lim
Good evening Jansen,
I can definitely relate to your experiences in the hotel industry overseas as I interned overseas as well. I admire your ability to handle multiple projects at once while meeting expectations of your superiors. I hope you are able to overcome your fear of speaking in front of larger groups.
Regards,
Serena

Dear Jansen,
I am pleasantly surprised by the amount of experiences that you have in the service industry! I am sure that these experiences are very important to you, since they have taught you many valuable lessons. As for public speaking, I fully understand you as I do face similar problems in terms of stage confidence. In light of that, I hope that we will be able to improve together through this module!
Best Regards,

Dear Jansen,
I believe that you have achieved a high of independence when you were an intern at Mauritius. I will be heading for an overseas internship for eight months and do not know what to expect. Hopefully you could give some advice!
I hope that this module will be useful to you as you try to achieve the goals you set for yourself. I look forward to seeing you improve on your presentation skills to the class!
P.S. it would be good if you included what an ‘S3’ Branch is for those who did not serve the nation.
Best regards,
Christopher
